America: Yes We Can!

It’s so hard to explain the emotion I felt when Senator, now President-elect, Obama won the necessary 270 electoral votes needed to become president. It is an amazing feat for a man that suggested to a nation and a people that it could have the audacity to hope and believe in the American Promise. No matter your views on President-elect Obama, you couldn’t help but feel heartened by the celebrations taking place not only throughout this country but the world as to what his presidency represents.

For those who believe the US presidential race is some simple run-of-the-mill passing-of-a-governing-baton, yesterday’s election showed us differently. I've learned that this election was about the heart of America. It was about the young people who were and are losing hope and the old people who have been forgotten. It's about those who have worked all their lives and never fully realized the promise of America, but now see the potential of that promise for their kids and grandkids. What has always been great about the American spirit is that we are a nation of dreamers. And yesterday, we dreamed of what seemed like the impossible 10 years ago and we stood together as a nation and made it possible. We haven’t made it to the promise land yet. But we certainly got closer yesterday.

Please share your story about how Barack Obama winning the presidency affected you.
